We have a semi trailer in the shop that will be getting some new paint. Has anyone discovered a great way to remove the old DOT reflective tape and adhesive? dgrimmius

A rubber decal eraser to get the tape off and some adhesive remover for anything that's left underneath. We just put new reflective tape on a trailer last winter and that's how we did it. Can be time consuming but it's what we found easiest. CEO

Almost red hot razorblade. Cuts like butter. At least for truck door lettering, never tried dot tape.... MI Fruit+Veg

If you are not worried about the paint underneath it I have used a hot water pressure washer with a turbo nozzle. Would probably take off a lot of the old paint also. tomosakis

It seems like the power washer will take them off when you don't want to remove them, and makes them stick better when you are trying to remove it. Ben D, N CA

I assume since your painting it, you are not worried about the paint. In that case...

Propane weedburner. Half of it will burn off, you don't even need to get it super hot. But makes sure all the sticker, glue gets warm enough to bubble.

Then, let it sit outside. Colder the better. Being hot makes the glue sort of brittle when it gets cold and it will fall and strip off very easily. Wire wheel in a grinder works much better after this process because the glue gets brittle and will buff off, rather than the grinder just sort of smearing it around.

I've had good luck with decals and tape with a straight razor in a holder, like you buy at any hardware store.  Before you start with the razor, take the razor to a bench grinder and grind the heal off the side you will use to scrape with.  This keeps the razor perfectly flat so it does not gouge paint or scratch.  When you start with that, the razor will get under the decal or tape and you keep pushing the razor with one hand while lifting on the tape with other hand.  You will have that tape off in 15-20 minutes.  On decals, I have used all kind of tricks and have found the razor to be best.  To get the adhesive off, you will need adhesive remover or paint thinner.  To get all the adhesive off can be more of a fight then the decal or tape sometimes.
